Imagine the the lush, thick jungle that grows right to the edge of the Pacific Ocean where most beaches and towns are only accessible by sea as found at La Troza. The luscious environment provides an ecosystem for not only mysterious mammals, reptiles, and bugs but also hundreds of bird species. Puerto Vallarta’s tropical weather is vital to sustaining this ecosystem with copious rain and sun sustaining the wide-ranging inhabitants of the jungle.

These environs in the tropical forests surrounding Puerto Vallarta's region are home to a sundry of exotic fauna and flora.  The rich jungle vegetation throughout the area is thick and unruly with an abundance of sun and summer rain to result in a steamy weather which nurtures the entire region. A diverse variety of trees can be found while exotic fruit is plentiful in the region and includes coconut, pineapple, macho banana, guava, mango, watermelon, and avocado.

A wide range of mammals populate the flourishing jungle including white-tailed deer, wild boar, armadillo, badger, coyote, skunk and rabbit as well as a variety of cats including the legendary jaguar, puma, ocelots, and smaller margays. You may even spot a coati mundi, a relative of the raccoon.

In addition to these mammals, reptiles are in abundance here. Two different varieties of iguana claim the jungle as home, including the green iguana and the spiny-tailed iguana. Do be careful of the poisonous bite of the Mexican beaded Lizard which is identified by its lumpy black hide, and white and yellow markings.

The combination of tropical weather, forest habitat, and virginal coastal habitat produce homes for an almost innumerable number of bird species in the region. The vivid plumage and songs of these birds keep the most avid of bird watchers coming back for more. Bird enthusiasts will see a wide range of species such as Yellow-winged Caciques, Black-Throated Magpie Jays, Amazon Parrots, Tropical Kingbirds, and Blue-Footed Boobies. In total, there are well over four hundred disparate species of birds that call the area home throughout the year.
